Use whenThe last fifteen minutes of a night shift, before the handover lands and before you drive home.
Night Shift Handover Reset
The end of a night shift is the least designed part of night work: the handover is rushed, the drive home happens at the sleepiest point of the twenty-four hours, and the day that follows is usually spent in a haze. This protocol is fifteen minutes at the end of shift, and it does two things — it makes the handover complete rather than approximate, and it puts a deliberate stop between the building and the car.

Breathing rhythmOn the drive, if you are fighting drowsiness, no breathing pattern substitutes for stopping. The only rule here: if you yawn repeatedly, pull over at the next safe place rather than continuing.
The sequence
-
01
Write the handover, do not speak it
300 s
Five minutes to write the handover in a fixed format: what changed tonight, what is still open, what the next shift should watch, and what you would do first if it went wrong. Deliver it in writing even if you also say it out loud — the incoming person at 06:00 is not at their best either.
-
02
Two minutes of light before you leave the building
120 s
If you are finishing in daylight, two minutes near a window or outside the door before you drive. If you are finishing in darkness, skip it and keep the car interior dim — bright light in the middle of your night is what makes the commute home feel like the middle of a day.
-
03
Cold air, water, and no decision-making
240 s
Four minutes in the car park before starting the engine: cold air on your face, water, and no decisions that matter. If you feel drowsy in any way, do not start the engine — sit it out, or take the transport you arranged in advance.
-
04
Plan the sleep window before you drive
180 s
Three minutes: decide the exact window you will sleep in when you get home, and what time you will get up. Written down, with an alarm set now rather than when you arrive. A night shift with an unplanned day is a night shift followed by no sleep.
-
05
Tell one person your plan
180 s
Three minutes: send one short message to whoever shares your household — "home by 7:20, asleep by 8, please do not call before 15:00". Night shift sleep survives or fails on whether the people around you know when you are asleep.
A written handover is a sleep protection device
A verbal handover at the end of a night shift is delivered by someone who has been awake for twelve hours and received by someone who has just woken up, which is the worst pair of states for a transfer of information. Writing it does two things: it makes the handover more complete, and it stops the incoming questions that would otherwise arrive by phone in the middle of your sleep window.
The commute home is the riskiest part of the shift
The end of a night shift lands near the low point of the body's daily rhythm, and the drive home is done on a road that is quiet, monotonous, and dark. Everything in steps 2 to 4 exists for those twenty minutes: light handled in the right direction, cold air, water, and no decisions. If you have the option of public transport or a lift on the days after a run of nights, take it — the schedule is more reliable than alertness is.
Decide the sleep window before you get home
Sleep after a night shift is usually lost not to light or noise but to indecision: a shower first, then a phone call, then one errand, and by the time you lie down the window has closed. Deciding the window before you start the engine, and setting the alarm then, means the plan exists before you are tired enough to negotiate with it. Telling one other person converts the plan from an intention into something the household can protect.
Environment tweaks
- Blackout blind or eye mask ready before the shift, not assembled when you get home.
- Phone on silent with the important numbers exempted, so the household can reach you without the world doing so.
- A fixed handover template saved as a form, so writing it takes five minutes rather than fifteen.
Questions people ask
Should I sleep immediately when I get home, or stay up a bit?
If your next shift is also at night, sleeping soon after arriving home usually protects the most total sleep. If you are rotating back to days, the reverse applies and you want to sleep as late into the day as you can manage. Pick one of the two deliberately rather than by accident, and keep it the same across a run of shifts.
How much caffeine can I use during a night shift?
That is a question for your clinician or pharmacist rather than a website, especially if you take any medication. The general shape of the advice is to keep caffeine to the first half of the shift and to stop several hours before your planned sleep window, because caffeine's effects outlast the feeling of alertness it produces.
I cannot sleep during the day no matter what. What now?
That is a clinical question, not a routine question, and it is common enough in shift work that it has a name and a set of approaches. Talk to a doctor who knows your shift pattern rather than experimenting with supplements; if you are routinely driving home on no sleep, treat that as urgent rather than as something to manage.
